The Great Alabama Bingo Debate

It is hard to understand why some state governments in the US are opposed to bingo, particularly electronic bingo. In Alabama the governor’s opposition to bingo and all forms of gambling has created a massive backlash against the governor’s anti gambling extremism. Alabama governor Riley’s position on electronic bingo has provoked raids on bingo halls, lawsuits and contentious debates in the state legislature. On one side the governor is supported by anti gambling and religious groups while the other side points out the economic benefits electronic bingo will provide. Like most states Alabama has been hard hit by the recession and bingo proponents see electronic bingo as a way to provide the state with much needed funds.

The argument came to a head the other day at a rally sponsored by anti gambling and religious right groups in front of the state house in Birmingham. The Governor’s Task Force on Illegal Gambling has threatened statewide raids against bingo parlors and three casinos have shut down because of the threats. Governor Riley has taken a hard line stance against the casinos despite widespread public opposition to the proposed raids.

When Riley attempted to address the crowd gathered in front of the statehouse he was shouted down by protestors. When Riley and his wife attempted to address the group of anti gambling extremists’ opponents drowned the governor out with shouts of “Let us vote” making it impossible for the governor to be heard.

Inside the statehouse proponents of legislation that would allow 10 electronic bingo casinos in Alabama decided not to seek a senate vote on the proposal because they do not yet have the required votes. The legislation would require 21 votes out of 35 state senators. If passed by the senate the bill would then have to pass the house and then Alabama voters would have to approve the measure in the November elections. Electronic bingo has widespread support throughout the state and the measure is expected to pass by a wide margin.

In the meantime Alabama bingo players may want to consider online bingo. Bingo websites are locked in fierce competition for players and are offering bigger bingo bonuses and most sites offer a generous bingo sign up bonus and a bingo deposit bonus. Some bingo sites offer bonuses of as much as 300% on a deposit. Many bingo sites are accepting American players and the bingo jackpots offered are far larger than any land based bingo facility can offer.
